Not that impressed with the AFTEC at least in my gun. I bought it and fit it per the instructions. I fit the firing pin stop to .002″ and broke the edges. I installed it without the springs to see how easily it moved and everything seemed good. I put both springs in and installed it. When I tested the tension, I found that it wouldn’t hold a round against if I slightly shook the slide. The round would just fall out.
So I took it to the range and shot about 75 to 100 rounds and it worked, so I thought it was good. When shooting the match the problem of not enough tension reared it’s ugly head. The round would extract as the hook of the extractor would grab the case, but because there wasn’t enough tension to hold the brass against the breachface, the next round in the magazine would push the extracting round up in the slide. Which caused it to ride over the ejector, and then the slide would go forward and start to load the next round. Sometimes a tap and rack would clear it, but if it didn’t I would have to strip the magazine to clear it.
Have you ever been so pissed off at your gun you wanted to throw it in the berm and use someone else’s gun to put it out of it’s misery? After the extractor broke at the last match in Omaha, I bought an AFTEC extractor and installed it in my gun. I thought the tension was a bit weak but it seemed to run in the limited testing I was able to do before this match. I was wrong!
First stage of the day had no issues with the extractor and ended up taking third overall on the stage. Got beat by a PCC shooter and an Open shooter. Stage plan went well and my hits were good. I could see from the video that the draw was a bit off and there was some trigger freeze on a couple of targets. (more…)
Carla told me to pull the trigger and order the Techwell PosiTec grips as I wanted to try and get the gun to feel more like my Shadows with the Shooting Sports Innovations Scale grips. I hadn’t gotten to feel them on a gun, so if I didn’t like them I could sell them or return them. In prep I had pulled the top grip bushings from the gun yesterday so the gun was ready as the top need to be replaced with slim bushings.
Pretty close to the Scale grips. I wish that there were Scales for the 1911!
Ordered on Monday and they arrived today. I ran to the Post Office and picked them up as soon as they sorted the packages.
Tonight I was a naughty boy and instead of strapping on the singlestack I threw my production rig on. Felt so good! I love the way my Shadows with the Scales fit my hands. Keep thinking of the Posi-tec grips for the 1911 as they are the closest thing to the Scales.
I feel more comfortable and confident with my Shadows. Reloads were smooth, draw still good. Practiced some body positioning and movement. Just felt better than with the Singlestack guns. Shadows are definitely my favorite guns I have ever shot. Not even planning on “upgrading” to the Shadow 2.
My pew pew is back up and running. After the extractor breaking at the last Omaha match, I somehow broke a grip screw off in the bushing. So new extractor, grip screws, and grip screw bushings. Grips are tight again, and the gun functions properly with a new extractor. I installed an AFTEC which was almost drop in.
Built some wall panels for training at the outdoor range. 6′ by 4′ PVC frame and snow fence. I grabbed a cheap post pounder, and I have some T posts. Simple setup for walls, pound in stakes, zip tie the panels to the posts and instant walls that can handle the winds of South Dakota. Also built some 3′ x 3′ shooting boxes for the outdoor range and dry-fire training in the back yard.
I really think my next major purchase should be an enclosed trailer. I have access to my dad’s open utility trailer, but I would love an enclosed 10 foot x 6 foot cargo trailer that I could organize wall sections, steel, target stands and supplies. In the winter I could put the range stuff in the shed and garage and load the trailer with my ice fishing stuff. I would be able to keep the bed of my pickup open so I can use it, and with less weight everyday I may save a bit in gas.
Been having some back pain but still fighting through it with the awesomeness that is modern medications. Probably should go to the chiropractor again.
All guns fit Timmy’s check box with room to spare. All the guns make weight. Lubed up all the gats with Multi-purpose grease thinned with motoroil. It works for me. I tried some fancy gun oils lately and I will stick with the “more messy” option.
I miss my CZ’s! Every time I take them out of the safe it feels like home, I love my scale grips the gun fits perfect for me. I can engage the trigger at the finger at the DIP joint and I can reach the mag release without really having to shift my grip excessively. Glad I found them, but it is really making me think I should try some Techwell Posi-tec grips as they are contoured more like the Scales on the CZ. Spending $95 on grips for a gun I don’t plan on shooting much kills me inside though.
